Provigil is a drug that’s use to treat narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a disorder
where the patient is excessively sleepy throughout the day. It’s also used to
help people who have irregular or late night work shifts stay awake. It can also
be used with other treatments to remedy obstructive sleep apnea. This is when a
person stops breathing many times a night. This makes the person wake up, but so
briefly that the period of wakefulness isn’t remembered. This still robs the
patient of a good night’s sleep. The drug works by altering neurotransmitters in
the brain that control the sleep/wake cycle. Provigil’s other name is Modafinil.

Provigil comes in a tablet that's taken once a day. It can be taken
with our without food and if it’s taken for narcolepsy should best be taken
in the morning. The patient should avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice
while she’s on the drug. If the drug is being taken to keep the patient
alert during a night shift, it should be taken an hour before work. It’s
important that the drug be taken the same time every day. If the patient
needs to change the time she takes the drug, she should consult her doctor
first. The drug should also be taken even if the patient feels well-rested,
as it’s not a cure for narcolepsy. Provigil can be habit forming and
shouldn’t be taken longer than the time doctor prescribed. Conversely, the
patient shouldn’t abruptly stop taking it without speaking to her doctor.
Before the patient is put on the drug, she should tell her doctor if she is
taking any other medications, including vitamins or herbal supplements. She
should also let the doctor know if she’s dependent or has been dependent on
alcohol, street drugs or prescription medicines, especially if those
medicines are stimulants. She should also tell the doctor if she has a
pre-existing medical condition, whether physical or psychological.
